In this Teen Tidbit episode, I explain why teaching teens to take ownership of their health, time, and responsibilities matters—especially through practical life skills like cooking. After hearing from a beta-test mom whose 13-year-old confidently made pancakes by himself, I break down ownership into two parts: practical skills (relatively straightforward to teach) and psychological ownership (which develops over time with intentional parenting).
When we involve teens early and give them real, meaningful responsibility, they arrive at adulthood better prepared. That principle inspired the Teens Cook Real Food course and the complimentary three-part video series available this week.

Time Stamps for Passing Ownership to Teens
0:12 – I was on Tidy Dad’s Tiny Tidbits podcast, which are just five minutes long. That format inspired me to be concise and share five practical tidbits this week.
0:45 – We’re celebrating the launch of Teens Cook Real Food with a free three-part video series focused on parenting teens intentionally.
01:06 – I love the story from our beta test: a young teen making pancakes independently, showing how practical skills build confidence.
2:02 – There are two parts to passing on ownership: the practical side (skills like cooking, scheduling, and self-care) and the psychological side (internal motivation and commitment). Both are necessary.
3:00 – Cultivating a supportive family culture makes it easier for teens to accept responsibility and feel ownership.
3:39 – I share a personal story about my son Paul, now 20. He learned to take responsibility for his health—like trying approaches to manage eczema—but ultimately he had to choose to make the change himself.

5:10 – Involvement is essential for ownership, and starting early matters. That’s why we teach kids and teens to cook: hands-on involvement gives them skills and confidence. The best time to begin is now.
