My son spotted a Chocolate Covered Strawberry Christmas Tree craft in Clubhouse magazine and begged to make it. It looked messy, but it was worth it—this is an easy, festive project that’s perfect to do with kids. I supervised while the boys made a few trees each and let them choose the sprinkle colors and star toppers.

We used toothpicks to dip and handle the strawberries before the coating set. Using a toothpick also makes it easier to shake off excess coating so the tree keeps a nice shape. For the base, I adhered the dipped strawberries to Oreo cookies with a small amount of white icing. You can simplify by opening the Oreo and pressing the strawberry into the frosting inside, though separating Oreos while keeping all the filling intact can be a little tricky.

The little candy stars we used for the tree toppers came from a local specialty candy shop; similar decorations are commonly available in baking-supply aisles at hobby stores. If you can’t find them locally, they are also sold online. We used white stars on most trees, but colorful stars look festive too.

Decorate with sprinkles while the coating is still wet so they stick. The coating usually sets in about ten minutes, and the finished trees make a charming holiday treat or party platter addition. Because strawberries contain moisture, plan to serve these within a day to avoid sogginess.

This is a simple project that kids love and that produces a cute seasonal treat. It’s a great hands-on activity for a holiday afternoon, and it gives little hands a chance to participate in making something edible and decorative.

If you want another quick kid-friendly holiday idea, try cinnamon-sugar snowflakes—simple and delicious, and equally fun to make together.

Description
These chocolate covered strawberry Christmas trees are a fun and easy holiday project to make with kids. They combine fresh strawberries, candy coating, Oreo bases, and festive decorations for a quick seasonal treat.
Ingredients
- 12 ounces dark green candy melts (available at hobby stores or online)
- 1 pound strawberries, stems removed
- 24 Oreo cookies
- White icing
- Sprinkles
- Candy stars for toppers
Icing
- 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons heavy cream
- Add water by the teaspoon and whisk until desired consistency. The icing should be thick, like toothpaste.
Instructions
- Set a heatproof bowl over a small pot of simmering water to create a double boiler. Slowly melt the candy melts, stirring occasionally. Keep moisture away from the candy to prevent seizing.
- Spoon or pipe a small amount of white icing onto the top of each Oreo to act as the base for the tree.
- When the candy melts are fully smooth, reduce heat to low. Insert a toothpick into the cut end of a strawberry and dip it into the melted candy, coating it evenly.
- Gently shake off excess coating. Using a second toothpick inserted near the pointed end, place the dipped strawberry on top of the icing on the Oreo.
- While the candy coating is still wet, add sprinkles and a candy star topper. The coating should dry in about ten minutes.
Notes
These were adapted from a Clubhouse magazine idea. Because fresh strawberries hold moisture, serve within a day for best texture and appearance.
