Easy emoji cake recipe (poop emoji cake) made at home with simple ingredients and no fondant covering. A chocolate cake is frosted with chocolate buttercream and finished with chocolate shavings for texture and shine.
After enjoying my Emoji Cookies (Emoji Oreos), I wanted to create a matching cake. Instead of the usual smiley or winking faces, this playful poop emoji design is funny, quick to assemble and perfect for a casual birthday or themed party.

How to make an emoji cake from scratch
- Bake the cake – Prepare a chocolate cake in a 9×13 rectangle pan (or your preferred chocolate cake recipe) and let it cool completely.
- Prepare the frosting – Make chocolate buttercream frosting or use store-bought chocolate frosting for convenience.
- Create a template – Draw or print an emoji template to use as a guide for cutting the cake into shape.
- Chill and cut the cake – Wrap the cooled cake tightly and chill it until firm, then place the template on top and cut carefully with a very sharp knife.
- Frost the cake – Use a spatula to smooth a thin, even layer of chocolate frosting over the shaped cake.
- Add texture – Cover the top with chocolate shavings or sprinkles so the surface has a rich, textured look.
- Add facial details – Roll white marshmallow or store-bought fondant to cut eye and mouth shapes, draw small pupils with an edible black marker, and attach them with a dab of buttercream.

Variations for the poop emoji cake
Chocolate sprinkles – Substitute sprinkles for shavings if you prefer a different texture or quicker assembly.
Smooth finish – Skip shavings and smooth the frosting for a cleaner appearance, then add fondant details for the eyes and mouth.
Different cake flavors – Use any cake flavor you like: chocolate, vanilla, or a richer option such as chocolate pound cake or banana chocolate chip cake.
Alternate frostings – Try chocolate cream cheese frosting or chocolate ganache for a different taste and finish.
Filled cake – For extra flavor, slice the cake horizontally and spread jam, fresh berries, caramel, or ganache between layers before shaping and frosting.
Mini cakes – Use a smaller template to make individual mini emoji cakes for party favors or individual servings.
Fully fondant-covered – If you prefer a perfectly smooth look, cover the entire cake with fondant and then add the facial features on top.
Colorful twist – Make a rainbow version by layering colored cake or tinting American buttercream with gel colors for a bright, playful version of the same shape.

Tips and techniques for a successful emoji birthday cake
Cool completely before decorating – Do not decorate a warm cake. Warmth melts frosting and causes shavings to slide off.
Make chocolate shavings – Use a potato peeler along the edge of a chilled chocolate bar. Cold chocolate shaves cleanly and won’t melt in your hands.
Use sturdy paper for the template – Print the cake guide on thick scrapbook paper so it holds its shape when you cut around it.
Sharp knife for clean cuts – A very sharp knife slices with fewer crumbs and gives a neater edge for shaping.
Chill the cake before cutting – Wrapping and chilling the cake for a few hours or overnight firms it up and makes cutting cleaner and easier.
Store-bought vs. homemade frosting – Either works. Store-bought saves time; homemade lets you control sweetness and texture.

Storage
Room temperature – If the cake has no perishable fillings, store it at room temperature in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight for up to 24 hours.
Refrigerate – Keep a decorated cake covered or in a cake box in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Allow it to come to room temperature before serving for the best texture and flavor.
Freeze – Unfrosted cake layers and frostings freeze well in sealed containers for up to one month. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before assembling and decorating.
