How to Make Smoky Cheetos at Home: Crispy, Flavor-Packed Snack

Smoked Cheetos are a surprising and delicious twist on a familiar snack. They pick up smoke flavor quickly, so start with a short smoking time and taste as you go — you can always smoke a little longer. If the smoke seems strong at first, letting the Cheetos rest after smoking will mellow the flavor and produce a pleasant, crunchy, smoky-cheesy result.

Cold smoking is the recommended method for Cheetos; avoid high heat. While temperatures up to 180°F can work, true cold smoking below 90°F gives the best, most controlled flavor without risking melting or altering the texture.

Use A Smoker Tube For The Best Results

A pellet smoker tube is my preferred tool for cold smoking. It provides steady, consistent smoke and good temperature control. Fill the tube with wood pellets, light one end, and let it produce smoke for a few hours — ideal for smoking a bag of Cheetos. Smoker tubes are also handy for adding smoke to foods cooked on a gas grill.

While your cold smoke setup is running, consider smoking other snack favorites too — potato chips, Chex Mix, or Cheez-Its all take well to a light smoky finish and make great companions to smoked Cheetos.

  • wood pellets

For the smoked Cheetos

  • 1 bag Cheetos

Instructions

For cold smoking (using charcoal)

  • Place 4 lit briquettes in the bottom of your smoker.

  • When the wood is smoking, add the Cheetos to the smoker.

For cold smoking (using a smoke tube)

  • Fill the smoker tube with wood pellets, place it in the smoker, and light one end. Once the tube produces steady smoke, add the Cheetos.

For the smoked Cheetos

  • Place the Cheetos in an aluminum pan above the cold smoke source so they are exposed to smoke, not direct heat.
  • Smoke for 20–30 minutes, gently tossing once or twice, until you reach the desired level of smoke flavor.
  • Let smoked snacks rest for a while before serving to allow the smoke to mellow and integrate with the cheese flavor.

Notes

These are best made with original cheesy Cheetos, though cheese balls or similar snacks can also be smoked successfully.
