Ingredient Notes:

  • Bacon: Thick-cut bacon crisps up nicely and adds rich flavor.
  • Kielbasa: Any sliced smoked sausage works; you can also use beef or turkey sausage if preferred.
  • Mixed beans: Use your favorite canned beans or a combination of varieties for texture and flavor.
  • Honey & brown sugar: A touch of sweetness balances the savory elements and elevates the sauce.
  • White wine (optional): A splash helps deglaze the pot and adds a subtle acidity.
  • Cinnamon: A pinch rounds out the flavors without making the dish taste sweet or spicy.

Dietary Substitutions:

  • Gluten-free / dairy-free: This recipe is naturally gluten- and dairy-free, but check labels on store-bought ingredients if you have allergies.
  • No wine? Use extra chicken broth to deglaze the pan instead.
  • Make it spicy: Add hot sauce to taste before baking or choose a spicy sausage variety.

Variations:

  • Extra vegetables: Add diced bell peppers, canned tomatoes, or other vegetables for more color and nutrition.
  • More broth: Add additional chicken broth to make the dish soupier or to loosen the sauce.

Tips & Storage:

  • Don’t drain the baked beans. Leaving the canned baked beans undrained contributes to the sauce.
  • Mash a few beans. Pressing some beans against the pot helps release starch and naturally thickens the sauce.
  • Stir while baking. Stir every 30 minutes or so to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  • Store leftovers. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.

Ingredients

  • 6 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped
  • ½ yellow onion, diced
  • ½ lb ground beef
  • 6 oz kielbasa sausage, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons garlic, roughly chopped
  • ¼ cup dry white wine (optional)
  • 1 (28 oz) can original baked beans, not drained
  • 1 (15 oz) can kidney beans, drained
  • 1 (15 oz) can cannellini beans, drained
  • 1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • ⅓ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a Dutch oven or other oven-safe pot, cook the chopped bacon over medium-high heat until browned and crispy, about 8–12 minutes. Remove bacon and set aside, leaving the rendered fat in the pot.
  3. Add the ground beef, diced onion, and sliced kielbasa to the pot. Cook 6–8 minutes until browned.
  4. Stir in the garlic and cook 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Pour in the white wine, if using, and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
  6. Add the baked beans (undrained), kidney beans, cannellini beans, black beans, chicken broth, ketchup, honey, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, cinnamon, and the cooked bacon. Stir to combine.
  7. Mash a few beans against the side of the pot to help thicken the mixture.
  8. Cover and bake for 60–90 minutes, stirring every 30 minutes to prevent sticking. Add more broth if the mixture becomes too thick.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving. Serve with cornbread or mashed potatoes.

Notes

  • Do not drain the baked beans. Their liquid contributes to the sauce.
  • Mash a few beans against the pot to release starch and thicken the sauce naturally.
  • Stir every 30 minutes while baking to prevent sticking and ensure even texture.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.
