Saltine Cracker Toffee (Christmas Crack): Sweet & Salty Holiday Treat

Some recipes are polite. This one absolutely is not. Saltine Cracker Toffee is the kind of treat that gets snapped, hoarded, and quietly wrapped in paper towels “for later.” It’s simultaneously salty, buttery, chocolatey, and playful—special-tasting without feeling like effort.

This version leans into contrast: crisp saltines, deeply buttery toffee, glossy melted chocolate, and a subtle peanut butter swirl that cuts the sweetness without taking over. It’s everything you love about saltine “Christmas crack,” but cleaner, more balanced, and dangerously simple to make.

What Makes Saltine Cracker Toffee Work

  • Saltines stay crisp under hot toffee and add just enough salt to balance the sugar without making the whole bar overly salty.
  • The toffee cooks in a short window that yields a glossy, set caramel without needing a candy thermometer.
  • The peanut butter chips gently melt into the chocolate, adding nostalgic nutty depth without overpowering the chocolate.
  • This Saltine Cracker Toffee breaks into neat shards that look great on a platter and hold their shape when packaged as gifts.

This Saltine Cracker Toffee uses just a handful of straightforward ingredients, each contributing to the crunchy, salty-sweet finish. The essentials:

  • Saltine Crackers: A crisp, lightly salted base that gives structure and crunch.
  • Butter and Brown Sugar: These combine into a rich caramel that soaks into the crackers and creates the toffee layer.
  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips: Smooth, melty chocolate that balances the caramel’s sweetness.
  • Peanut Butter Chips (Reese’s): Swirled through the chocolate for a creamy, nutty finish.

Note: See the recipe card at the bottom for exact ingredient amounts and measurements.

Fun Add-Ins and Easy Swaps

If you want to customize the bars, try these simple variations—each works with the base recipe:

  • Chopped Toasted Nuts: Pecans or peanuts add crunch and a festive touch.
  • Flaky Sea Salt: A light sprinkle on top sharpens the sweetness and brightens the flavor.
  • White Chocolate Drizzle: Drizzle after chilling for visual contrast and extra creaminess.
  • Crushed Pretzels: Replace some saltines with pretzels for extra salty crunch.

How To Make Saltine Cracker Toffee

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)
  1. Prep pan: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with foil or parchment and lightly spray with non-stick spray.
Lay the saltine crackers in a single layer on top of the baking sheet.
  1. Arrange crackers: Lay saltine crackers in a single layer to cover the tray. Break a few in half if needed to fill gaps.
Melt butter and brown sugar together.
  1. Make toffee: Melt butter over low heat, stir in brown sugar, then raise to medium. Bring to a boil and cook until the mixture turns a deep caramel color—about 3 minutes of boiling while stirring.
Pour in the hot toffee mixture on top of the crackers.
  1. Coat crackers: Immediately pour the hot toffee over the crackers and spread quickly into an even layer with a spatula.
After baking the toffee, sprinkle chocolate chips over the top and return to the one for 2 minutes.
  1. Bake and melt: Bake for 4–5 minutes until the toffee bubbles. Remove, sprinkle chocolate chips over the top, return to the oven 1–2 minutes to soften the chips, then spread into a smooth layer.
Scatter the peanut butter chips over the chocolate and let it sit for 2 minutes, then swirl with a fork.
  1. Swirl and set: Scatter peanut butter chips over the melted chocolate and let sit for 1–2 minutes so they soften. Swirl the softened chips into the chocolate with a fork, cover, and refrigerate until firm. Peel off the foil, break into pieces, and store in an airtight container.

Pair a batch of Saltine Cracker Toffee with cozy holiday treats for a festive spread. The contrast of salty crunch and buttery caramel works beautifully with rich hot chocolates or coffee-based sweets for a satisfying, seasonal treat.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use different crackers for Saltine Cracker Toffee?

Yes. Classic saltines give the ideal salty crunch, but graham crackers, Ritz, or matzo can be used for a variation.

Do I have to use peanut butter chips?

No. The peanut butter swirl is optional—you can swap it for white chocolate, butterscotch, or omit it altogether for a classic chocolate toffee.

How do I keep the chocolate from separating?

Pour and spread the hot toffee evenly, then top with chocolate while it’s still warm so the heat helps the chips melt. Return to the oven briefly and spread immediately for an even finish.
