How to make Fruit Trifle

This trifle is straightforward to assemble. The richest part is the cream cheese filling, but it’s quick to prepare. Follow these steps to build your layered trifle:

Process of making trifle filling and layers.
  1. Cube the angel food cake and set aside.
  2. Beat cream cheese and vanilla until fluffy, then add powdered sugar and mix until combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whip chilled heavy cream to stiff peaks. Fold the cream cheese mixture into the whipped cream until smooth.
  4. In a large, clear trifle bowl, layer about half the cake cubes on the bottom.
  5. Add one-third of the blueberries around the edge so they remain visible through the bowl, then spread half of the cream cheese mixture evenly over the cake and berries.
  6. Top with half the sliced strawberries, then add the remaining cake cubes.
  7. Add the second third of the blueberries, then spread the remaining cream cheese mixture and smooth the top.
  8. Finish with the remaining strawberries and top with the last of the blueberries and optional raspberries.
  9. Chill the trifle before serving to let the flavors meld.

Substitutions

If you don’t have a listed ingredient, try these swaps:

  • Cake: Ladyfingers, sponge cake, or pound cake can replace angel food cake. You can also use Nilla wafers for a different texture.
  • Whipped cream: Store-bought whipped topping like Cool Whip can be used instead of freshly whipped heavy cream; thaw completely before folding it in.

Variations

Customize the trifle to suit your tastes:

  • Pudding trifle: Substitute instant or homemade pudding (vanilla or banana) for the cream cheese mixture.
  • Chocolate trifle: Use chocolate cake and consider chocolate pudding for a richer dessert.
  • Fruit swaps: Try blackberries, peaches, pineapple, or mandarin oranges to create seasonal or tropical versions.

Storage / Freezing

Storage: Refrigerate the trifle and enjoy within 3 days for the best texture. It will remain safe to eat for a couple more days, but moisture from the fruit may soften the cake.

Freezing: Freezing a trifle is possible but not ideal because cream-based fillings can change texture when thawed. If you freeze it, plan to use within 1–2 months and thaw in the refrigerator before serving.

Top tip

Use fresh, ripe fruit for the best flavor and texture.
